Enjoying and Promoting the Australian Shepherd in NSW

Welcome and we hope you enjoy our new website!

Beginner’s Sheep Herding Clinic.

The ASA of NSW is privileged to be holding our inaugural sheep herding clinic.
This clinic is a beginner’s guide to sheep handling and general principles of sheep behaviour –
flocking, flight, pressure, the moving of sheep in yards and paddocks, how to start working a pup or
dog that is new to stock, and more. The clinic will combine a mixture of theory and practical principles
and will be geared to the working style of the Aussie Shepherd and the needs of the novice handler.
We are very fortunate to have Colin Webster as our Clinician – for those new to herding, Colin is an
accomplished and highly regarded trainer, and very successful competitor in ANKC herding.

DATE — Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th July 2009
START TIME — 9am (both days)
VENUE — Herding Area, Dogs NSW, 44 Luddenham Road, ERSKINE PARK NSW
CLINICIAN — Colin Webster
COST — $150 for 2 days. Attendance both days is required.

The opportunity is available for 3 additional people to view the clinic. Viewers
may observe and listen but may not participate and must attend both days. The
fee for viewing the clinic is $70.

Colin Webster, morning tea, lunch, coffee / tea and cold drinks, and wine and

About Colin Webster
Colin Webster is the current ANKC National Herding Champion handler on sheep and ducks. He has
won 20 High in Trial from the Advanced class, and in total of 33 High in Trial on sheep & 10 High in
Trial on Ducks. Colin also won the Border Collie National Champion in March 2009.
In 1980 Colin’s interests began to focus on working sheepdogs. He obtained an Australian Working
Kelpie and began in Utility trials where he won his first trial he ever competed in! From there he very
quickly became a well-known and much respected competitor.
He was the head stockman for Woolmark™ at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, where he trained
“Errol” the Olympic Ram as well as all dogs seen in commercials relating to Errol. Colin’s talents as
an animal trainer have been used in 2 movies & 2 mini series (including “Jessica”) of which he was
head wrangler of 3,500 animals. Colin has been involved with the making of over 200 commercials,
where he was in charge of and trained a number of different types of animals including cows, ducks,
goats, sheep & chickens with one of the better known ads being the Home Loans Ram (Raymond the
Ram).
Colin’s other highlights are in his 3 sheep trial career include Winner of the Australia Open in 1991 &
Winner in the Supreme Improves Tasmania 2003. Colin has won in 3 sheep trials, over 50 Open, 70
Novice, 30 Improvers & in his humble beginnings over 30 yard dog trials. A regular top 10 finalist, Mr
Webster is also a very conversant and knowledgeable teacher of stockmanship and working dogs of
all breeds.
Colin judges ANKC Test & Trials and has also judged three sheep trials for 20 years. Highlights of his
judging career include the Commonwealth Championships & 10 State Championships.
Colin’s positive training methods are effective for all breeds of working dogs and are not restricted to
one breed. Colin has all varieties of ANKC working dogs coming to his classes.

Clinic Format:
The clinic will be a combination of theory and practical activities. Colin’s focus is on providing a sound
platform for beginners to start herding with their dogs and positive learning outcomes for the handler.
What to bring:
Weather resistant clothing, wet weather footwear, an Australian Shepherd and an open mind. Your
dog will need shelter whilst the theory component is being conducted indoors.
Each handler may bring only one dog – if you have multiple dogs and are unsure which one is most
suitable to work with at this clinic, you should bring the dog that is the easiest to train. If you require
further guidance about selecting the most suitable dog to bring, Colin will be able to offer assistance
with this prior to the clinic.

Attendees and Fees:
Clinic Fee — $150 for both days of the clinic
Viewing Fee — $70 for both days of the clinic
* Please note we are unable to offer concessions for this clinic.

10 attendees will be accepted at this clinic and it is expected that these spaces will be filled quickly.
Attendees must be beginners in herding and the clinic will be filled on a 1st come, 1st served basis.
There are 3 spaces available for interested people to view the clinic – viewers may observe and listen
but cannot participate and cannot have a dog in attendance.

If you are interested in attending this clinic, please confirm your attendance by contacting Ros Fraser
via ros@complianceassured.com.au or call Ros on 0403 939 870 / 02 9584 3625.
Payment is required by 12 June 2009 – EFT or cheque payment option is available, with further
details being provided upon confirming your attendance.
In the event that any spaces are available after 12.06.09, the clinic will then be open to all beginner
handlers eligible to compete in ANKC herding trials regardless of the breed of their working dog.
Regards,
Ros Fraser.
